Random Thought #8

It was my mom who instilled in me a love of books and reading in general, and it was my dad who made me a lifelong fan of newspapers – and a lifelong hater of a corrupt and tyrannical government. I consider myself fortunate.

My parents won’t leave me a lot (or anything at all) in the way of material possessions, but they left me with something a lot more important – an insatiable thirst for knowledge and the constant drive to improve my mind (not my financial wealth).

As a son, that’s all I could ask for. My parents both had a good education, and they made sure that my siblings and I all went to college. One sister even finished two undergraduate courses, and another sister and I went on to graduate school.

But most importantly, my mom and dad both talked to us about the horrors of Martial Law under Marcos Sr. They even brought me to one of the Edsa I rallies, and I have a picture of me as a toddler in my mom’s arms, wearing an oversized yellow Ninoy shirt. That was the first-ever rally I attended, in what would be the first of many in my lifetime.

I feel sorry for families who are collectively stupid, I really am. But I feel sorrier for young people who are well read, well educated, and critical thinkers but whose parents are Marcos loyalists. A lot of those young people have OFW parents who don’t know anything else but to make money abroad, and it’s these kids who have to suffer the unenviable position of having dumbass parents.

Take heart, kids. Study hard, use the dollars or euros or pounds or dirhams or riyals that your parents keep sending you to finish college, and when you graduate thank your parents for the financial support but not for the intellectual vacuum. (I mean, thank God for school and books and newspapers, right?)

Graduate and vow to never be like your parents (at least intellectually).
